About Moyer Animal Shelter

Moyer Animal Shelter is a Powell, Wyoming animal rescue dedicated to helping dogs and cats find safety, care, and loving homes.

Since 1998, we have served the Powell community by providing shelter, adoption support, lost and found assistance, fostering opportunities, community education, and other resources for local pets and the people who care for them.

Our Mission

At Moyer Animal Shelter, our mission is to provide a safe and compassionate place for homeless, lost, and vulnerable animals while helping each one find the loving home and future they deserve. Through responsible sheltering, veterinary care, spay and neuter services, enrichment, adoption, and community partnerships, we work to improve the lives of animals and strengthen the bond between people and their pets.

Our goal is not simply to find animals a home, but to help them find the right home—one where they can feel safe, loved, and valued for the rest of their lives.

Our Story

A Legacy of Compassion Since 1998

1998

Moyer Animal Shelter Begins

Moyer Animal Shelter’s story began in 1998 with the vision of one compassionate woman, Elfriede Milburn, and a community of individuals who believed that homeless animals deserved a safe place to turn.

Early Years

Building a Local Resource

The shelter became a place where community members could turn for help with adoptable pets, lost and found animals, and animal care support.

Growing Support

Community Involvement Expands

Through volunteers, foster families, donors, and adopters, Moyer Animal Shelter continued growing its impact in Powell and surrounding areas.

Ongoing Care

Helping More Pets and Families

Over the years, the shelter has continued supporting the community through adoptions, fostering, surrender assistance, and education.

Today

Still Serving Powell

Today, Caring for Powell Animals continues the important work that began in 1998, building upon the foundation established by Elfriede Milburn and the community members who shared her vision.

Moyer Animal Shelter is more than a building where homeless animals stay. It is a place where compassion becomes action, where second chances begin, and where our community comes together to make a difference.

Our Impact

Since 1998, Moyer Animal Shelter has made a meaningful difference for homeless, lost, and vulnerable animals throughout Powell and the surrounding communities. Through adoptions, family reunifications, veterinary care, spay and neuter support, and community partnerships, we work to create better outcomes for dogs and cats in need.

Our impact is measured not only in numbers, but in the animals helped, the families reunited, and the community members who make this work possible.

Success Stories

Gracie, a brown tabby cat, standing on a soft blanket

In August, a community member saw Gracie get hit by a car and brought her to us. Dr. Whitt at Paintbrush Veterinary Clinic found a broken pelvis but expected it to heal without surgery. The bigger challenge was her fear. Gracie hissed, swatted, and hid so much in foster care that she came back to the shelter after about a month with a recommendation that she live as a barn cat.

Instead, we let her set the pace. Every day we cleaned her space, brought her favorite wet food, and talked to her quietly, and we respected every hiss. Slowly she came out of her carrier, stopped hissing, and started to chirp. Then one day she let us pet her.

Her pelvis has fully healed, and so has her trust. Today Gracie is a sweet, chatty girl waiting for a family to earn her heart, one gentle moment at a time.
